Pop culture, to me, is all popular "fads" that are sustainable throughout time that people can relate to. I chose music for this blog because music is culture. It is hard to think that music would play such a large part in the culture we live in but, if you can see the changes in culture you can also hear it in the music. Some say that the language used in music is corrupting the youth in this country, what are your opinions on this?

  1. Melissa I believe that Language in Music is a great title for today's pop culture. I really like your blog. I think that is a great brief definition on pop culture. I agree that music is a big part of pop culture. I think some genres of music like gangster rap can corrupt kids because they are trying to copy the rappers speech and image. (Shundrick Parker)

    1. Exactly, Children growing up in a situation where they might connect to the lyrical content can, and will, connect to the wrong message the artist, or lack there of, is trying to get out in the world.

  2. The lyrical content of music is similar to movie content or video game content. Age and maturity level play a big part whether or not the content is appropriate for the consumer. Hopefully the consumer is strong enough in their convictions to not act upon what they are hearing, rather appreciate it for its art and message.

    1. I agree, having no structure and understanding of the art of music will have a devastating outcome if it allowed.

  3. Melissa I like your blog site. I too believe that the lyrical content of music has a huge effect on our younger generation as well as movies, video games, and music videos. However, I am a firm believer that it starts in the home and the values that the parents instill in children. But I also believe that peer pressure in today's pop culture plays a big role. What the younger generations need to understand is that not every hard core rapper has actually experienced the things they rap about in their music some of it is for entertainment purposes. I have a rule in my house in which I do not allow music videos because I have a young daughter and I don't want my daughter to think that is how she is supposed to dress and dance.

    1. I absolutely agree, my children listen to any music they like but I make sure they know although, the writers of the song may have a personal connection to some of the lyrics doesn't mean that everything is not how it is understood in the song. I feel communication plays a large part in trusting they will make good decisions as they grow.
