Assignment 1-4-2

What theories seem to apply to your popular culture topic? How do these theories describe, analyze or evaluate the topic you have selected? What insights do you gain from applying these theories to your popular culture topic?
Popular Beliefs: There have been a lot of people who judge the lyrics in certain songs solely based on the language that is used or a hidden message that only venerable minds can understand. The belief that some music has a subliminal message is still undetermined because there is no evidence of this being true or factual. Popular Belief could be argued due to teenage suicides and the note left by these teenagers stating that the music told them to do it but, again there is no proof that the song forced the child to take this route.
Myths:  This would have to be one of my favorite concepts to argue. In my personal experience, family members have told me that the music my children choose to listen to will not only corrupt them but, also keep them from reaching their maximum potential. This is when the argument gets really interesting and that I have to explain why I allow them to choose their personal favorites. I remember a story my mom told me about Elvis and how she was not allowed to listen, speak of, or participate in his fan club just because of the provocative way he danced. This is where I feel this becomes a myth because, Elvis, from what I have seen, danced what he felt not only because of the sex but because of the love he had for the music he shared.  I feel that when a child reaches a certain age they have the right to make certain choices for themselves and, as long as my children know they are not to act on the lyrics, and that they are just words they put to music  they will live a fulfilled life.
Icons: Music has always had a sort of icon that people attach to, whether the attachment is to a person, a beat, or a song. Musical Icons will never go away they are a part of our history and the future. When it comes to icons a lot of people feel that it is only a popular band of a certain person that is a member of that band, but this is only true on a small level because, each culture has an icon they can look up to and popularity does not always determine the ability to become an icon in music.

Icons

The icons I have chosen are; Facebook, You Tube, and iTunes. Facebook is a world wide social network that allows you to connect with everyone in the world. Since it's start up it has become a staple for communication, not only for teenagers but for all of us. You Tube has become the "go to" for watching videos of all genres such as, music, stunts, and do it yourself. Without You Tube children of today may not know what a music video actually is. The third and final icon is iTunes, this is a site where you can download a song or album of your choice for a small fee without having to go to a "brick and mortar" store.

I chose Facebook because it is the most popular social network that is available for reconnection and communication. Having the ability to search for former friends and family has allowed for social growth and a sense of healing for some that are having a difficult time in their life. A lot of people  feel Facebook is an outlet for people to vent their problems and issues but, I feel you take what you want from it. You Tube is another social outlet that has become apart of everyday life, I chose it because of the variety of information you can get from the videos that are posted. As I stated in the previous paragraph without You Tube the children of today may not know what a music video is, they don't have the access to the outlets I did as a kid with MTV and VH1 that feature the videos of their favorite band. iTunes is one of my favorites, not only can you pick and choose what song you want to own, without buying the entire album, but you can choose when you want them.

If you have read my blog, so far, you can tel I love music and all the components that make each song. Without, some, music we wouldn't be able to express ourselves through words, dance, and emotion. With that being said, the icons I have chosen enable me to experience the feeling that comes with enjoying the beats, the sound, and the raw power that your senses develop when you feel the emotion in a song that captures you.

Pop culture, to me, is all popular "fads" that are sustainable throughout time that people can relate to. I chose music for this blog because music is culture. It is hard to think that music would play such a large part in the culture we live in but, if you can see the changes in culture you can also hear it in the music. Some say that the language used in music is corrupting the youth in this country, what are your opinions on this?
