What theories seem to apply to your popular culture topic?
In music there are a lot of theories that apply and are
followed by rituals and stereotypes. Many people would not consider tapping
your foot to a beat a ritualistic movement but, in most cases it is. When you
hear a song you can feel what the artist is feeling and because you can’t
always jump around you find another outlet to release that feeling, so you tap
your foot. Stereotypes are always used when talking about music, not only about
the band but, also about their fans. It is said you can tell a lot about a
person by the music they listen to but, I have a problem with this assumption. I
know I would not like to be labeled as someone who listens to….. In fact, I am
a fan of all music. Music was meant to enjoy not labeling another person by
what they choose to connect with.
How do these theories describe, analyze or evaluate the
topic you have selected?
Describing
theories about music could become repetitive and boring but, if you enjoy all
of the parts of the craft you will begin to understand why you can talk about
the same thing over and over. With rituals many people can say there are better
evaluations through a religious outlook but, does it become better because
there are religious meanings behind them? In my opinion, NO! Religion doesn’t always
have to become the object of conversation. A person should evaluate the music
and how it makes you feel. Now as for stereotypes, many people are guilty of
looking at a person and labeling them based solely on the way they are dressed.
If someone is dressed in all black and do not make themselves a part of a
conversation you would think they are gothic, and a loner, or if someone is
dressed nice and is wrapped up in the middle of a conversation a label of
popular would come into mind but, what if the taste in music were reversed?
Stereotypes are a harmful yet tricky topic to talk about.
What insights do you gain from applying these theories to
your popular culture topic?
The only insight that I could come up with is that not
everything is as you see it, hear it, or think that it is. There are many
components to theories and leave you to make your own.
